This check in fee has bothered me as well.  Last week I learned that KAYAK.COM keeps track of all the fees for all the airlines.  When you search for flights, scroll down the left side and enter the number of bags you plan to check in.  In other words, you can find the real cost of your ticket before showing up at the airport.  

During my trip to Asia, I flew 3 different airlines.  No baggage fee on any of them.</description>
